5 things On My Mind: Corey Dickerson, Doug Armstrong voodoo magic, and other ramblings
What's my first reaction when the wife says she's making meatloaf?
The Cardinals made a move today. At long last, after extended searches and boardroom discussion, St. Louis signed Corey Dickerson today. The journeyman outfielder will be 33 in May and is coming off a couple down seasons, but you have to carry some excitement with a guy who carries a career .815 OPS and 116 OPS+.
Those stats put him above average, perfect for a revival season in St. Louis. A one year, $5 million contract is what young guns like Nolan Gorman and Juan Yepez need in a mix for DH at-bats. Gorman will see action at second base while Yepez covers first base backup duty and at least a part-time stake to the DH.
Dickerson adds depth on the bench, and he’s just as exciting as Colin Moran or Jose Martinez. His 2021 offensive struggles were legit, but he did bag five triples. In 2019, he slashed .304/.341/.565 at the plate. In 2018, he won a Gold Glove. Now, the outfield has four Gold Gloves total. He only makes the team better, giving them a left-handed bat who can crush righties. Don’t worry about the age. It’s a one-year deal.
