5 Things On My Mind, Lunch Break Version: Street corn is the Walton Goggins of comfort food
Here's another rapid fire round of commentary on random subjects.
What’s everyone’s batting average when it comes to spilling some of your lunch on your clothing? Today, I managed to get all of it into my mouth without any droppage, so taking the win is the proper route. Humans are messier than many presume, and that begins and ends with food consumption. With that said, here’s another condensed round of rumination while I enjoy a break from counting, finding, and picking plumbing supplies.
#5-Street corn speaks to the heart, especially when done right. Crescent Plumbing Supply marketing whiz, Emilia, called it a love language this afternoon during the company’s latest counter lunch, and she’s not wrong. Mixing a vegetable with seasoned cheese and something crunchy for a third wheel can be a delicious side dish. All it needs is the most important thing that too many chefs forget about. SALT AND PEPPER! Don't forget about flavor when it comes to anything, street corn or basic rice. Bring street corn to the subsequent peace treaty.
#4-The Cardinals proved me wrong last night. They won the second game of a doubleheader, sweeping the Reds to improve their record to 14-17. That’s good for fourth in the division; it’s a comfy spot for them unless they can string more wins together. Don’t be surprised that Nolan Gorman isn’t swinging the bat well. You don’t correct a high strikeout ratio until another jersey is put on. He’ll thrive somewhere else. Just watch. Jordan Walker will need baby steps to get fully back to the point that he was two years ago. St. Louis screwed him up well. Cincinnati leads the Birds right now, 2-1.
#3-The Blues couldn’t overcome the Winnipeg Jets blitz on the road. The energy and ability were night and day away from Enterprise Center, where the good guys in blue lit up the opposition and chased the Jets’ goaltender in back-to-back games. When Winnipeg gets a lead, which they had for most of the game, they are very hard to play against. The middle of the ice resembles water in a desert, and the opposing net resembles the fountain of youth to teams like St. Louis. Unless this trend can be broken, the Blues could enjoy a seven-game series, but moving to the next round requires a better start than Wednesday night. The loss of Dylan Holloway continues to sink deep into the troubles of this current hockey team.
#2-Before he was Batman, Christian Bale played an American Psycho named Patrick Bateman. Huey Lewis’ music never sounded the same after watching this semi-old drama about a businessman who moonlights as a serial killer. Reese Witherspoon and Willem Dafoe populate a nice cast, but Bale terrorizes characters and cinema fans by portraying madness that rivals Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. That smile can go both ways, good and bad, depending on the role the Welsh actor is swept up in. Daniel Day-Lewis may not leave his characters, but Bale does well enough by staying in that skin between action and cut. It celebrated its 25th anniversary this week at Galleria 6 Cinemas in St. Louis County. Celebrate the good ones. Only the Hi-Pointe Theater and G6 Cinemas consistently put these older gems on.
#1-The White Lotus made waves on HBO this spring, and I am getting into Season 3 of the bizarre drama series about a getaway resort that’s not exactly what people think. Carrie Coon, Michelle Monaghan, and Patrick Schwarzenegger populate a nice ensemble cast, but Walton Goggins will get me to watch anything he plays a part in. A chameleon who can illuminate the light and the dark of the human soul on camera, he can do it all and make any character interesting and intoxicating. He made his bones as a villain on Justified, but the man continues to do incredible work. I am only an episode in, but it’s a weird enough group and story to keep one invested.
Until next time, take care and keep your eye out for the next right cross heading towards your jaw. You never see the first coming, but the next ones can be avoided.
If this team and its fans are at the point now where we see Jordan Walker getting back to where he was two years ago as something to hope for, then just admit he’s a bust and trade him for pennies. He was average, at best, two years ago - an acceptable rookie season. Now he’s a liability. I think the potential is still there but I don’t agree with this lowering of the bar. They need a better plan. I don’t know what such a plan looks like, but the current one isn’t working.
