Spring training isn’t even two days old yet, and the St. Louis Cardinals already have two pitchers being unable to throw. Monday saw Alex Reyes go to the trainer’s room with shoulder soreness. Tuesday, it was Jack Flaherty who will have an exam on his right shoulder. This morning, the Cardinals announced Reyes received a shoulder injection, and won’t make the opening day roster.
Anyone still mad about less spring training games?
This isn’t the first time this happened. Last year, the team couldn’t get Miles Mikolas out of spring training. Carlos Martinez made his last start on July 4. Flaherty went down in May late and didn’t return until August, where he made three starts before missing another month.
Before the 2021 season, Bill DeWitt Jr. and John Mozeliak knew Dakota Hudson wasn’t returning until late in the season. Reyes became the closer, and Jordan Hicks couldn’t make it out of the early stages of the season.
