Thanksgiving doesn’t last a single day. You may point to it on the calendar as a singular event, but the food giving that takes place doesn’t last 24 hours.
Example: Two days later, I am cold-shanking the Mac n’ Cheese like I am being watched every 15 minutes. I polished off my Factor ready-to-eat meal like I was being timed, but the M&C didn’t escape me. I may have it tomorrow too. Thanksgiving doesn’t have a sweet origin tale, but its moral compass seems to have surrounded the idea of coming together and enjoying good company and comfort food.
We do that for a few days. As the old man said at the coffee shop in “Reservoir Dogs:”
“'Alright Ramblers, let’s get rambling.”
First off, don’t hesitate to watch “Till.” The 1955-set film that centers around a racist crime of the highest order, the movie gathers its power from the lead performance of Danielle Deadwyler. She stuns as the mother who suffers an awful tragedy, and rages against the very white machine to implement change in the system. It’s a courageous movie that gathers strength as it ages, with the tone producing an eerily horror effect that doesn’t lift for most of the movie.
Yes, it’s not an easy watch. Parts of the film are uncomfortable and aim to leave a dent. The idea of your son going off to spend a week with his cousins shouldn’t frighten any parent, but it was a different world back in the 50s. A more cruel world, if you can believe it. The film never becomes heavy-handed and maintains a true story thriller-type aesthetic for its 140 minutes.
They are brisk and powerful. It is worth $20 on Amazon Prime, especially if the relatives are still in town. “Till” can be a painful watch, but it’s a very necessary one.
What’s necessary is going to the gym 4-5 times every week, at least in my house. Or maybe, that’s how I draw it up in my head. Even a quick yet potent 30-minute home workout counts; just like a three-mile run is enough for my knees. However, even after four straight days of workouts, I am sitting here wanting to get something in.
That’s my addiction. The one that sits next to writing. Fitness keeps me healthy, in the body as well as the mind. You can’t forget about the positive effect it can have on your entire person.
The confidence in even a half-hour lift, push or pull, or a full-tilt leg and abs slash session, can be immense. It’s a 50/50 action for me. Start where you need to. Fuck the gym prudes and semi-pros. They’re under-educated and too loud, avoid them and just lift.
I am a sucker for White Claw seltzers at the moment. It started on a date with Mango, and proceeded into a full-blown crush with Passion Fruit and Watermelon. All that’s missing is a Christopher Walken voiceover. The drink is so easy to drink, and doesn’t sit in your stomach as pronounced as beer and bourbon can. A few of those in me, and the gym isn’t out of the question.
The Blues lost a fucking game. Okay, they lost two. After seven wins in a row erased the nasty taste of eight losses in a row, St. Louis dropped games against Buffalo and Tampa Bay. Old friend Pat Maroon watched the Lightning send a surge through the Blues, beating them 5-2. The team is now 10-10 heading into tonight’s game against Florida. This team isn’t going to pick one speed or level of play to sit on, so hang the fuck on and grab extra bourbon.
Hockey, just like any other sport, is a game of attrition, for the players and fans. It’s a long season. If the team can hang around .500, they buy more time to figure shit out.
