Buffa’s Buffet: 5 things on my mind, including The Texas Tornado
From the man cave couch to your eyes.
Being under the weather allows for the body to heal and rest, while the mind gets to move from an always-moving vibe to a “move if you want to” place of comfort. All to say that I’m binging the new Netflix series, Fall of the House of Usher, from my couch in the not-dark-enough basement.
I posted a few things on Facebook yesterday in a mini 5 things on my mind style, so let’s relax and expand upon them for the newsletter. Every day I wake up, I inch closer to deleting my Facebook account all together, bringing all the things unfit to print there right over here. But making decisions while you’re sick is like promising to be better when you’re in a McDonald’s line.
Until then, let’s ramble on.
1) People do take Facebook too seriously. For every “you can only choose 3 candies” post, there’s a post that gets people so angry and worked up, enough for friends to try and label you based off one comment. I took a shot at beggars on the street a few days ago on there, and suddenly felt the heat of mental health awareness soldiers and the homeless police. Never mind the fact that my brother is schizophrenic and my wife battles mental health storm clouds on a daily basis.
Being called an asshole (twice, thank you Eric Hall, nice S&P beard btw) never felt better. If I have to be an asshole that can get under people’s skin easily and get a conversation going, maybe there’s an impact to be made. Denis Leary already gave me a theme song. The truth is I’m actually a nice guy… on Tuesdays.
There are times where I think Mark Zuckerberg’s Face shack is a social justice seminar, and not just a cool place to put out some thoughts. I can’t think of the last time I read something that upset me enough to comment 23 times as a result. Maybe I’m not doing it right, but this is a social networking site, folks. Used to be fun.
Facebook used to be a cold lamb sandwich, not as boring as turkey or chewy as roast beef. Only an insane movie buff and my wife will get that reference. Now it’s not as bad as Twitter, yet on the down swing of a promising career.
2) Martin Scorsese won’t waste my time at the movies. Few directors will get me out on a work night for a 3.5 hour flick, but Killers of The Flower Moon looked like a game changer, from the Osage tragedy to the cast and scope. I watched it last night and will be posting a review next week.
It’s filmmakers like Scorsese that keep me going back to the theater, because you know he’s going to do something different and challenging. A movie that won’t make you feel good, yet will assure you that you just saw something good. Goodfellas in a theater when I was a kid was a game changer. Decades later, he’s still doing it.
3) Blues hockey came back last night. Thank goodness. The Cards season was rough enough, something has to take our minds away from the mind numbing offseason while they look for their next Steven Matz. If the boys in blue can locate some defense and Jordan Binnington can get back to being dominant on the ice instead of dominatingly tempered, St. Louis can make the playoffs. While they lost 2-1 to Dallas, Binnington and the defense showed up to play. It felt like 2019 Blues hockey all over again. Remember in hockey, at the very least, they can fight and hit people unlike baseball.
4) I haven’t watched a lot of MLS soccer here in St. Louis yet, so I won’t bother you with half-sneaky fart commentary, or what I think a striker should be doing. But I’ll say it’s awesome for St. Louis. This town deserved a better class of athlete, and City SC is gonna give it to them. It breathes fresh financial life into the city, and gives the other teams in town a good push. I will also jump on the Klaus bandwagon.
5) The Iron Claw looks like a bittersweet masterpiece based on the trailer alone. Any hardcore wrestling fan knows the power and tragic story of the Von Erich family.
Jeremy Allen White playing Kerry “Texas Tornado” Von Erich is sublime. Zac Efron transformed himself for the lead role of Kevin Von Erich. Holt McCallany finally has a damn good shot at an Oscar. Sean Durbin wrote The Nest. He can write. This one will hurt and soar.
Remember all I can do is be me, and that includes getting better at being me every day.
