Buffa's Buffet, Vol. 67: 5 things on my mind
Let's talk about a few things, including vintage Steven Seagal and that Chris Rock Netflix special.
Say what you want about Steven Seagal’s real life choices (and his fashion), but leave his damn late 1980s and early 1990s action films alone. For instance, 1991’s Out for Justice absolutely owns.
Metacritic awarded it a less-than-kind 38 (out of 100) rating. I just issued Metacritic a rating of “check yourself, before you wreck yourself.” What do they know? Film critics who wake every day thinking about not writing about every damn movie. I wouldn’t trust them. That’s my dad joke of the week. Something designed to be cheeseball funny that clicks four months after hearing it.
Seagal had a good run, including more notable-and critically kind movies such as Under Siege. He ran into mafia trouble behind the camera instead of taking them down cinematically. His relationships with various real-life gangsters, and a triage of other bad decisions, kept him from achieving Sylvester Stallone longevity.
But every action horse isn’t built for the long haul. That doesn’t lessen the impact and enjoyment of their greatest hits. Out for Justice is all yours for an Amazon Prime rental fee of $2.99. Come for the Judo, stay for variety of languages used in the film. Men and women call each other shit before giving a loving two-line embrace in Italian. Seagal speaks three different languages in the movie. Come get some, as his Gino would say. Let’s talk about the local baseball team getting ready to fire up another 162-game season.
