Buffa's Buffet, Vol. 81: 'Jaws' on the big screen, the perfect 4th of July movie, and summer mowing rage
It's hot, everyone. Join me for an old fashioned rant. But first, let's talk about a shark.
Seeing classic movies on the big screen will always have an allure, especially to someone who wasn’t born yet or old enough to experience it for the first time. Since January, a few film buffs have been putting together special screenings of those films. An eclectic and inspired list of well-known oldies, refurbished with a showing in a movie theater.
Stretch your home screen as much as you want, but you don’t touch the effect of going out and visiting another theater. From The Sting and Goodfellas to Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Searchers, the old candle burns bright the first Thursday of each month at Galleria 6 Cinemas.
St. Louis film historian Mark Zimmermann put the series, named Great Film St. Louis, together late last year. The Paul Newman-Robert Redford heist film was the first one out of the gate in January, and there has been one every month since. This Thursday, Galleria may need a bigger boat.
Jaws hits the Galleria on July 6, screening once during the day and once at night. The evening showing will be hosted by Zimmermann, general manager Landon Burris, and myself. Giveaways will take place, snacks will be given out, and maybe a few shocks take place.
Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfus, and Roy Schneider battling a Great White shark right next to a small town that already lost limbs and lives to the overpowering water beast. Made in 1975 and bringing in an *impressive I guess* $798,400 on its opening weekend, the movie cemented Steven Spielberg as a major directing player and has been revered since.
Is there anything more horrifying than being on a small boat out in the middle of nowhere trying to take on a big ass shark? I’d bet the list was short. Come out to Richmond Heights and support a local theater, and take in a classic. It’s okay to be scared.
What else?
