Cannabis Digest: Finding the right strain for you
Sativa, Indica, or Hybrid. Your choice will determine your level of high.
Yes, this is a diary of a weed-smoking 40-year-old American male, battling the adulting sectors of middle age and trying to find his place in this wayward land. Scroll on and learn something.
“You take one puff, and everyone and everything around you gets better.”
The words of my wise father echoed throughout my brain a few, or close to four, years ago when I took the first drag of what would become my favorite guilty pleasure. I had smoked sporadically before, but never latched onto the idea of marijuana playing a part in my life. Putting up gates around myself in regards to drug use was always pertinent due to the fucked up world we’re living in.
The reason people have such hesitation or immediate disgust with cannabis stems from a medical condition freaking them out in relation to the usage, or they’ve read that more Americans have been killed by opioids than in Vietnam. But they forget the specifics and important bullet points about cannabis:
-It’s not going to kill you.
-When smoked in moderation, it can be your best friend.
-When smoked in heavier amounts, it will just make you more sleepy.
-It’s much safer than booze.
Outside of that, have some fun with it. Know what you’re getting out of the drug. YES, it’s a fucking drug. Get over tiny little feelings and understand it better. If I rolled or stuffed a pre-roll full of sativa herb and you smoked it, the world wouldn’t end. The sky wouldn’t collapse. You’ll just feel a lot better than you did.
Oh, what’s a sativa? It’s the energetic sibling of the cannabis gene family. The euphoria and cerebral surge in to hang out with the body, triggering a rewiring of the brain and an invasion of the blood flow. You’ll feel alert and ready to tackle laundry, lawn mowing, and dinner. It’ll put a smile on your face and make you giggle.
In the land of cannabis, there’s three general kinds: Sativa, indica, and a hybrid of the two. Indica is the relaxing side of the family, the strain that could give you couch lock and put you to sleep. This is the appetite helper and sleeping pill all in one. A hybrid just blends parts of the two together, especially if the lineage is from a sativa plant and an indica plant.
Every strain smoked has parents after all, a mom and dad strain that will help define its characteristics and effects. A potent sativa could be a Trainwreck or Ghost Train Haze plant, while anything with Kush in the title is an indica-powered ride.
Each one will give you a different effect, but the main idea is whatever stress you had will be cleared off the table. That’s the sweet spot of cannabis: finding the right amount for you and the right kind. If you are a 9-5 type like me, a good, potent indica will do the trick. If you’re a freelancer like I was a month ago, you may dig a sativa all-day vibe, one that doesn’t knock you down.
That’s all for today. We’ll get into the vitality of THC% in your choices next time on Cannabis Digest. Happy smoking, friends.
