Sports fans are naturally built with unruly short attention spans, but St. Louis Blues fans take it to another level-especially when it comes to goaltenders.
Case in point, this season: Jordan Binnington helped the team win a Stanley Cup in 2019, and produced a better-than-given-credit-for second season in the truncated 2019-2020 schedule. The following season saw a small rise in his GAA (goals-against-average) and save %, but still decent numbers overall. This current season has been anything but decent.
Binnington’s current GAA/Save % is 3.35/89%. That’s cool if you’re the fella who just got released from the second backup position. He’s letting in soft goals, and backup Ville Husso has all but taken over the position-albeit with a softer schedule. The usual narrative of “they’re playing better in front of Husso” is currently running at a full sprint. Of course, they’re just playing better… for the better goaltender of the moment. Who hops onto the ice and sees a struggling netminder, and thinks it’s okay? Few if any.
