Is it a good time for Yadier Molina to be a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals?
Nostalgia has to die at some point, right? It's a sugar rush that the team must avoid.
Life is full of distractions. They live in every moment of our lives, begging for our attention so the task at hand is lost. For example, I can open up Facebook while I write and trip into about 78 cooking reels before returning to an article that seems like an orphan after the interruption. Distractions are intoxicating because it’s like the human brain pulling over on the side of the road and playing on their phone for thirty minutes to two days. At some point, it’s a bad idea.
The St. Louis Cardinals need to unlearn and completely abandon bad ideas if they want to be relevant again. Things broke down so badly here that the team making organizational infrastructure hires is news to celebrate. President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom made a series of hires over the past couple of weeks, including a Buffa. He also reportedly shut down one particular coaching hire:
Yadier Molina.
The terrific Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that there won’t be a reunion in the dugout this year for Molina and the Cardinals. Maybe it’s the fact that he never showed up for a special advisor gig in recent years. Does he really want to answer 57 questions from the media every weekend? What if there’s a basketball tournament in Puerto Rico that he’s missing? All worthy, if unfortunately humorous, factors in the decision being made by the new guy in office.
There are a lot of opinions out there on this right now. My friend (kind of cool to say) and writing hero, Bernie Miklasz, offered up a great take on his daily video over at STL Sports Central. Give it a watch:
What do I think? Well, before the egg is cracked on the Hampton Avenue pan here (now Chris’ Pancakes is on my mind), I’ll offer up another chance to subscribe to the Buffet here. Get all the posts. It costs less than a latte at Starbucks. I deliver. Or, keep getting 50% for free, which isn’t a bad idea. Onward and upward we go, and the destination is still unknown.
