Lunch Time Ruminations: Is Jake Gyllenhaal’s six-pack enough, ‘Road House’ loyalists?
Patrick Swayze will not roll in his grave over this one. At least not yet.
Screwing with a cult classic, one that made more fans over time than critical consensus upon its release, can be dangerous. Choosing a classic 80s action gem like Road House is like lighting those risks on fire and playing with the heat.
However, against all odds and judging by a trailer just released today by Amazon Studios, this remake or “reimagining” doesn’t look too bad at all. In fact, it looks like a spring blast.
What happens when you combine a jacked Jake Gyllenhaal (a damn good actor and movie star) with a scenery-chewing new baddie in Conor McGregor and suave-looking Billy Magnussen, speaking words from the Nice Guys screenwriter and directed by Doug Liman? This is what you get.
Take me to guilty pleasure town, Mr. Liman.
In the six minute clip below, I get into the first preview and what people keep forgetting about with a remake. Also, which St. Louis Blue is having a nice season but could find himself on the trade block? Hey, I’m sorta-kinda happy that baby soft Ivan Drago is having a good bounce back year, but that only means you trade high. Ladies and gents, he is replaceable.
