I know what you’re thinking and no, all five movies aren’t going to be sports movies, even if they could be and the list would function just right.
Kevin Costner turned 67 this week and still manages to be an underrated overall actor, all the while owning Academy Awards for “Dances With the Wolves” and currently being part of a hit television series in “Yellowstone.” People can’t wash “Postman” and “Waterworld” off their heads, even if neither film was as bad as “Eternals.”
However, it’s impossible to ignore the subgenre that Costner helped create decades ago: an area of movies that includes hit classics such as “Field of Dreams” and “For Love of the Game,” a pair of baseball movies that live and die on his star power and performance. The latter is one of the rare times that everybody could agree he out-acted John C. Reilly (playing his catcher) and J.K. Simmons (playing his manager).
It’s only when you stretch the legs a little and cast your gaze wider on his IMDB page do you see some true hidden gems. Mr. Underrated has at least TEN great movies, but here are my five favorites at the moment. “Silverado” and “Dragonfly” are not included.
Reminder: These are my faves, not yours.
