Once again, the Cardinals enter season with a patchwork rotation

When Derrick Goold posted the official 2022 active roster for the St. Louis Cardinals this morning, the rotation area only had four names listed:
Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Steven Matz, and Dakota Hudson.
With Jack Flaherty and Alex Reyes on the mend and new arm Drew VerHagen battling with Jake Woodford (and now Jordan Hicks) for the fifth spot, the rotation once again looks like a gigantic question mark as Thursday’s season opener looms. Once that day comes and the season kicks off, there’s no slowing down. The ability to hit pause will be gone until late October.
In case you slept through COVID-19’s sequel last year, the Cardinals were in this situation a year ago. Flaherty wouldn’t make it out of the first two months of the season, missing two months with an oblique injury. Mikolas’ forearm injury from the 2020 winter barked, and Carlos Martinez would also hit the injured list.
