Quiet offseason makes John Mozeliak’s 2025 presence seem pointless
We already know it’s his fault, so engage Chaim Time.
“Mr. Mozeliak, what is it exactly… that you do here?”
The pause and ellipsis should be understood by fans of Office Space, a quotable movie that hasn’t lost its fastball over the years and relates to many workplace settings and jokes. John Mozeliak is the rich guy who walks into a place that doesn’t have a use for him anymore. He’s the one who should be interviewed by John C. McGinley and Paul Wilson.
Unless the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals pull off a last minute trade that sends Nolan Arenado out of town, Mozeliak’s presence and purpose won’t add up when the season starts. Midseason trades and other moves can be made that add some legitimacy to the fact that he is still here even though the rebuild has already started. Outside of some calls, what’s he doing?
The Cardinals can’t seem to move or add talent, their payroll-slashing skills unable to work like an old fax machine failing to transfer a message. They’re the only team in baseball who haven’t added any players this winter. The fans have received the message loud and clear for years. The results have been lackluster enough for fans to call for Mozeliak’s head, so why is he still here?
Idea: Keep the fans interested, don’t see a stiff drop in attendance in 2025.
Response: Keep the same guy in office whom the fans despise.
Again, something doesn’t add up. It stinks and I don’t think it’ll lead to more ticket sales. It’s another case of playing it safe.
We know it’s happening so Mo can take the fault and blame for a decade of hapless baseball, but that doesn’t mean he has to stick around. Leave and we’ll still blame all the bad shit on you. I still blame Mike Matheny for bad traffic. It works and doesn’t harm any important people.
Engage Chaim Time. After all, any trades made will be in service of the future and the rebuild. That’s Bloom’s department. I’ll always wonder if he could have pulled some other additions/subtractions. He doesn’t have any bias tied to the past, only an onus on future improvement. It’s too bad that has to wait until next winter.
Maybe Boston springs for Arenado. That would make it all seem better and open up playing time for Mozeliak’s final batch of top prospect refugees like Nolan Gorman to get one last legit shot at making himself a fixture instead of a trade candidate. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Either way, Bloom could have done it better I bet. At this point, Rachel Phelps could run a rebuild better and she included a dead guy on her spring training invite roster once upon a time. (Rest in peace, Margaret Whitton.)
Maybe let Mozeliak come in on Saturday and handle those TPS reports. He’d serve an actual purpose then.
I’m sure Bloom is perfectly happy to let Mozeliak wear the full stink of the mess he created. He’ll start fresh in 2026 and even if he does a B+ job, the fans will be patient, knowing that he has a big job to do cleaning up Johnny’s mess.
