Disclaimer: I know there’s no baseball at the moment, and no scheduled baseball on the horizon. But if we act like it’s not coming back soon and stop talking about players and teams getting better for the upcoming season, then the bad guys truly win. So, let’s discuss some fun stuff and hope that an owner or three finds their conscience.
What has been decided is a universal DH in the Major Leagues. Please, don’t whine about this. Everything that pushes the Owners and MLBPA to an agreement should be celebrated, and a designated hitter in each league is the direction this game is going.
Yes, a universal DH means more offense and excitement. Yes, it also means the end of stupid double switches that are unneeded and happen late in games. (Suck it, Mike Matheny.) Yes, it means a little strategy is lost on the manager’s part. It also means the pitcher doesn’t get to hit, which means a shit ton of boring bunts (more than half of which are bad) will no longer be happening. If you are a fan of the original NL setup, kick rocks because a universal DH is good and means more big swings.
Question: Should the Cardinals pay free agent slugger Kyle Schwarber $50-60 million to be their DH over the next three seasons? Let’s get into it.
