The Film Buffa Podcast: Tom Hardy and Timothy Olyphant create wild 'Havoc'

Gareth Evans action is an acquired taste, but this crime thriller delivers the goods.

When it comes to action sequences, there are a number of ways that Hollywood delivers the goods. The John Wick filmmakers like to pull the camera back and show the actors doing the stunts and going through the motions. In less-than-stellar outings, the camera will awkwardly speed up and aid the actors in the process, but take away from the value of the presentation. Gareth Evans practically invented the speedy, stylized action sequence with The Raid movies, showcasing the incredible Iko Uwais feuding off hordes of bad guys in a nonstop, dizzying display of physicality.

Think of the older Jackie Chan movies where he is getting attacked from all angles, and the camera seems to be attached to his foot and fists as they fly through the air. That’s the name of the game in Havoc, Evans’s latest showcase starring Tom Hardy and streaming on Netflix. It’s not everyone’s cup of cinema tea, but it delivers on what fans of The Raid like and offers a nice Hardy performance.

Timothy Olyphant gets to break bad a little as a fellow corrupt cop working alongside Hardy’s bruised badge as they uncover the bloody details of a drug deal gone terribly wrong. For an hour and 47 minutes, the bullets and fists fly. Is it worthy of your time? Should you click out of this podcast right now and go start it?
