One of the questions coming into camp for the St. Louis Cardinals was the usage of Steven Matz. Would he be a starter? Reliever? Somewhere in between, or on the injured list?
After a good camp, he’s positioned himself for a starter role. Coming from the unfortunate school of bad Redbird contracts that once had Dexter Fowler and Brett Cecil as students, there’s good reason to carry as much faith in his ability to contribute as one would Stubby Clapp at this point. But he has the potential to be good, as evidenced by a solid 2023 season (solid for Matz at least). Every other year, he produces a negative WAR that gives the team an extra “I told you so” on the reasons not to drop $40 million, but hopefully the house of Chaim learns something from the trivial days of John Mozeliak’s tenure.
In the video above, recorded at the Crescent Plumbing Supply headquarters due to the internet being down in the area and the University City area being not as important as other zip codes, I broke down what I would do with Matz and the best case scenario at this point. How much juice can the team squeeze out of a dry ass rag?
Listen in and subscribe afterwards if you like the goods. I’ll be doing more of these “Breakfast with Bernie” type podcast killshots that don’t waste your time or my own. If you want, give me the backup email or someone else’s email, even someone you don’t like. Until next time, cheers and thank you for the time.
