Sometimes, talking is easier than writing. The mind opens up more freely, and the words and precise thoughts come rolling out.
After ruminating on the series finale of Amazon Prime’s “Outer Range,” a fascinating and highly original science fiction western starring Josh Brolin and Imogen Potts, I decided to pod it and not just write it up. A “Film Buffa” spin-off, because television shows are at their best when they’re cinematic.
“Outer Range” presented a Greek tragedy-type plot, one that carried multiple themes and delivered powerful body shot moments. Royal Abbott (a taut Brolin) delivering a vicious threat to the almighty. Tom Pelphrey’s Perry Abbott, wounded by absence and a bleeding heart, changing the trajectory of his life and the future of his family with one bar fight. Imogen poisoning the mind of a Tellerson son. The show had its feet on the ground while exploring trippy aspects about our world and whether or not it has other dimensions.
Also: Give me all the dancing Will Patton scenes.
In a land of multiverse plots, “Outer Range” decided to look more inward, creating several anti-heroes who were equally fascinating and heartbreaking in the process. We didn’t know what they were doing or who they were, but we followed them anyway. Who knew that Royal was a man out of his time and that Autumn was a woman out of her own?
I SHALL WARN YOU THERE WILL BE TONS OF SPOILERS INSIDE THESE 36 MINUTES.
This is more for the people who have already watched it than ones looking for a new show to binge. But, I really do hope newcomers take the plunge. I can tell you what and my “why,” but finding your “why” is a whole other journey. Take it.
Know this. A moment in the final 30 minutes of the season finale is one of the biggest rug pulls in recent memory. You just won’t see it coming.
Enjoy the pod. Subscribe if you haven’t, and tell a friend or two. Ramble On with Buffa will keep rambling!
